Jack Dorsey Expresses Concern Over Dystopian Apple Product

The unveiling of Apple Vision Pro at WWDC 2023 has caused a global buzz, and for good reason. This AR/VR headset is reminiscent of something straight out of a sci-fi movie like Ready Player One. Tech giants like Elon Musk and Sundar Pichai have shared their thoughts on the device, with Pichai expressing excitement about its potential for the future of technology. However, former Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has raised concerns about the impact it could have on humanity.

Apple Vision Pro – a sign of a dystopian future?

In an interview with Krystal Ball and Saagar Enjeti on the Breaking Points podcast, Dorsey expressed his concerns about AR/VR headsets, comparing it to WALL-E, Pixar’s dystopian future movie where people have left Earth on a wheelchair. with their eyes fixed on the floating screens. While Dorsey acknowledged the potential technological advancements Vision Pro could bring, he stressed the need for a balanced approach to prevent future generations from being consumed by AR and VR technologies.

“I think they tend to be phenomenal at gaming. I think it’s an obvious evolution of the interface. I’m very concerned and worried about how it can alienate people – and how it alienates us even more,” he said in a conversation with former hosts of The Hill’s Rising.

Inspiration from science fiction

The former Twitter CEO also talked about the interplay between science fiction such as Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One and Neal Stephenson’s Snow Crash, adding that “If you want to understand the future of any technology, read science fiction.”

Dorsey, who currently serves as CEO of Square, emphasized the very important role science fiction plays in shaping the ideas and goals of creators in developing and bringing these technologies to life.

As AR and VR technologies develop and become much more important in the future, Dorsey said, “I’m skeptical about some of the benefits, and I hope we’ll have an honest discussion about some of the downsides that come with more and more social distancing. .”
